Veteran | Trailblazer | Mentor | Proud American
Susan Wilson’s journey is one of service, strength, and unshakable faith. Born and raised in Evanston, Illinois, she moved to San Antonio, Texas at the age of 16 a move that would mark the beginning of a lifelong path of purpose and transformation.
In 1976, as the U.S. Army transitioned into an all-volunteer force in the wake of the Vietnam War, Susan made a bold decision that would shape her life: she enlisted in the United States Army. Inspired by her childhood years spent marching in a color guard led by a former military Leader who instilled discipline, pride, and patriotism, Susan knew early on that the military was her calling. That spirit of honor and commitment would carry her through a distinguished career.
Originally aiming to serve in MOS 71L (Administrative Specialist), Susan began her career working in the military postal system before transitioning fully into administrative duties. Her versatility and drive led her to opportunities far beyond the office, earning her a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), which opened doors to operating 18-wheelers, buses, and even limousines during and after her military service.
Over the course of her Army career, Susan was stationed three times in Germany, and served in Korea, Hawaii, Fort Bragg, Fort Hood, and Fort Dix, culminating in her retirement at the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSG) in Hawaii. One of her proudest moments was being able to care for and support her mother while stationed there, an expression of the deep love and loyalty that defines her character.
After retiring from the Army, Susan continued to serve her community through her work with the U.S. Postal Service and various local initiatives. She finds joy in faith, fellowship, and singing in her church choir, cooking with friends, and gathering with fellow veterans at her local VFW Post. Her love for life, country, and people shines through everything she does.
Susan lives by the belief that a meaningful life is one devoted to helping others. As one of the proud Black women who served in the historic Women’s Army Corps (WAC), she helped break barriers and pave the way for future generations of servicewomen. Her remarkable journey—from marching in a childhood color guard to standing tall as a combat-ready WAC soldier and later serving as a dedicated public servant—is a powerful reflection of the strength, resilience, and grace of Black women in uniform. Susan’s life is a shining example of what it means to live with purpose, serve with pride, and uplift others every step of the way.
